To move layers around simply click on that layer in the layer window and then after clicking (make sure you have the Move Tool selected - (v)) drag it around the page. A neat trick that I use all the time is that if you right click with the Move Tool (Img 6a) you can select which layer to drag around. Another neat trick is the option of checking the box ‘ auto select layer’ in the ‘Options Window’ (Window>Options or Enter on numpad, Img 6b) on the top left of your screen.

This window is always chock full of goodies and worth exploring for each tool. The autoselect layer auto selects layers when you select them, but you probably guessed that already. In other words, instead of having to click on the layers palette and selecting Layer 1 before moving around Layer 1, with auto select selected, just click on top of Layer 1 in the main window and it will move around.
Back in the layer's palette, pressing that eye on the left will turn a layer’s visibility on and off.
That’s really all you need to know for now. If you grasp that you understand layers. Good for you. That’s the hardest concept when most people first learn this program.
